At the end of the 18th century, the first building of what would later become the church of Sant Cristòfol was constructed. The boom in maritime trade during this century led to the segregation of the municipality, which was definitively constituted in 1836. Currently, industry and commerce are the economic engines of the city, along with summer tourism and maritime leisure offerings. Other significant activities include floriculture and, to a lesser extent, fishing, which has significantly declined in recent years. The separation from Premià de Dalt led to a significant population growth, driven by the arrival of the railway and improved communications. This demographic increase became notably pronounced, as in the rest of the Maresme municipalities, during the second half of the 20th century.

The history of the town is closely linked to that of Premià de Dalt, as for a long time it was its maritime district. The first coastal settlements date from the 15th and 17th centuries and were known by the name of Sant Pere de Premià. After the first Neolithic human settlements and Iberian villages, such as Cadira del Bisbe, the Romans left their mark on the territory. From that era, part of a villa dating between the 1st and 5th centuries is preserved, as well as the Can Farrerons building, from the 4th to 7th centuries. In the 19th century, Premià experienced a strong industrial boom, with its strengths in the textile sector and printing.
