At the old Maternitat headquarters in Raval, wet nurses and babies coexisted in the lactation rooms, and, in fact, these babies were often sent to external wet nurses' homes due to lack of space. The role of wet nurses was important because artificial milk of that era was of very low quality, and the rejection rate was very high. Many infants literally died of starvation during their first months of life. The transfer to the new facility brought about an exponential improvement in lactation conditions, and subsequent weaning, thanks to the space, hygiene, and scientific advances in artificial feeding systems implemented there. At the old Raval headquarters, there was barely enough space for children, and therefore, mothers had to leave shortly after giving birth. With the large amount of land available at the new Maternitat facility, this changed, and it was decided to create separate areas specifically dedicated to the care of mothers. Thus, in 1913, the public administration merged the Casa de la Caritat — where older children went to live — with that of the Maternitat i Expòsits, in order to offer a more comprehensive service.
