Our Method for Applying Venetian Stucco in Horta
Our process for applying Venetian stucco is thorough and methodical, ensuring a flawless and enduring finish for your Horta home. It begins with an initial site visit and consultation, typically lasting 30-45 minutes, to assess the walls, discuss your vision, and provide a detailed quotation. Once approved, we schedule the work.
- 1
Surface Preparation (1-2 days)
We meticulously clean, repair, and prime the walls. This crucial step involves filling any cracks or holes, sanding smooth, and applying a specialised primer to ensure optimal adhesion of the stucco. This takes considerable time but is vital for the final appearance.
- 2
First Stucco Layer (1 day)
The initial layer of stucco is applied evenly across the entire surface using a stainless steel trowel. This layer provides the foundational colour and texture, and is allowed to dry completely, usually overnight.
- 3
Subsequent Stucco Layers (1-2 days)
Two to three additional thin layers are applied, each burnished with the trowel to create the characteristic polished, multi-tonal effect. This is where the artisan's skill truly shines, building depth and sheen.
- 4
Finishing and Sealing (1 day)
The final step involves burnishing the surface to its desired lustre and then applying a protective wax or sealant. This enhances durability, makes the surface water-resistant, and deepens the visual appeal. The entire process, depending on surface area and complexity, typically spans 4 to 6 working days.
