Inside the Butsems factory, next to an oak tree, was the fountain called La Guatlla (of the quail), which gave the neighbourhood its name. Its use by industry and the dumping of rubbish in Montjuïc during the 1960s contaminated it. Today, only the memory remains, a monolith and a hymn. “Our grandparents remember when they sought the name, / to baptise our neighbourhood, it was very easy to find. / The quail gave a sharp cry, while the fountain sang. / They chose Font de la Guatlla as the most precious in the world” (Our grandparents remember when they sought the name, / to baptise our neighbourhood, it was very easy to find. / The quail gave a sharp cry, while the fountain sang. / They chose Font de la Guatlla as the most precious

How we work

Before the Civil War, La Font de la Guatlla also grew along the Gran Via. A chocolate factory and two light and bulb factories (Lámparas Z, on Mèxic Street, and Trèbol) were established there. The enriched ragman Pau Forns built six blocks of flats between numbers 272 and 282 of the Gran Via, which are still known as the Cases del Drapaire (Ragman's Houses). After the war, the rural atmosphere of the neighbourhood gradually faded. In 1949, the parish of Santa Dorotea was erected on an old wheat field. At the same time, characters such as the ricotta seller, the furrier, the sock seller or the pine nut seller, who sold five cents of pine nuts to children while telling them a story, gradually disappeared. On the other hand, the nine streets that were built going up towards Montjuïc were named after flowers: Dàlia, Gessamí, Crisantem... From such a secluded and small neighbourhood, the associative tradition is surprising. In 1889, the first leisure entity, Els Hereus, was created on Sant Fructuós Street. And a year later, El Recreo, next to an inn on Amposta Street. In 1910, the choir La Nova Lira d’Hostafrancs was founded, also on Sant Fructuós Street. Two years later, another entity was born, Panxeta, on Rabí Rubèn Street. Much of this activity was generated by the workers of the two large factories that were established in the neighbourhood following the example of Emili Clausoles' gas factory, located on the Gran Via. When to call for enamelling doors and windows in La Font de la Guatlla

During the early Franco regime (1940-1960), an entity called Nia Nesto, which means 'my nest' in Esperanto, organized talks and cinema sessions. It had to close in 1968, when some of its members were arrested. However, the Magòria school cooperative, the Neighbours and Friends of Magòria entity, and the Font de la Guatlla Neighbourhood Association resumed social and protest activities during the late Franco regime. As a result of this, already in democracy, the neighbourhood centre and the La Muntanyeta school were gained by residents without having to give up the other public school, Pau Vila. Open in new window The area between Montjuïc mountain, Plaça d'Espanya, the Magòria stream or Mineria Street, and the Gran Via is known, simultaneously, as the Magòria and Font de la Guatlla neighbourhoods. This is made clear by the name of their neighbourhood association. However. Even though it is a small territory, several historical and urban factors allow us to define Font de la Guatlla as the most sheltered area under Montjuïc, while Magòria would be the closest to Plaça d'Ildefons Cerdà. Trajà Street would be the dividing line between the two parts of the neighbourhood.
