It tells us that the people who made these paintings in Simanya expressed themselves with the same language. There are many more similarities with the Pyrenees and with Cantabria than with other places in the Mediterranean," explains Morales. "We don't know what the contacts were like, but there certainly were some because they shared the same cultural tradition," he adds. The first speleological exploration with a scientific character in the Simanya cave was carried out in 1911. It was also archaeologically excavated in 1930 by the Centre Excursionista de Terrassa. It is, surely – or was before all these vestiges were found and, therefore, before they could be accessed – one of the most visited in Catalonia. It belongs to the Sant Llorenç Natural Park, a destination for many excursions and outings, and is quite accessible. "It's curious that in such a well-trodden and visited place, such exceptional remains have been found, and no one had noticed until now," Morales points out. The research has been published in the _Journal of Archaeological Science Reports_.
