In an old industrial area of Poblenou, named Icària in memory of the ancient utopian socialists, the Vila Olímpica was built as a residence for the athletes who participated in the 1992 Olympic Games. Its subsequent transformation into a residential neighbourhood was designed by the Bohigas-Martorell-Mackay-Puigdomènech team, also incorporating projects by other architects who won FAD awards. The operation simultaneously involved the recovery of this coastal front for the entire city, with the creation of the large leisure spaces of Port Olímpic, the Port and Nova Icària parks, and the eponymous beach. After a few years of slow implementation, today the Vila Olímpica is a thriving area with the services and activities that give vitality to a true neighbourhood. Among the major facilities located in the area, Pompeu Fabra University stands out, situated in the renovated facilities of former barracks. The university's library occupies the unique building of the Dipòsit de les Aigües, which formerly fed the fountain in Ciutadella Park, located nearby.
