During the early Franco era (1940-1960), an organisation called Nia Nesto, meaning 'my nest' in Esperanto, organised talks and film screenings. It had to close in 1968 when some of its members were arrested. However, the Magòria school cooperative, the Vecinos y Amigos de Magòria organisation, and the Font de la Guatlla Neighbourhood Association resumed social and campaigning activities during the late Franco period. As a result of this, in democracy, the neighbourhood centre and La Muntanyeta school were established, which the residents won without having to give up the other public school, Pau Vila.

How we work

Before the Civil War, La Font de la Guatlla also grew along Gran Vía. A chocolate factory and two lighting and bulb factories (Lámparas Z, on Carrer de Mèxic, and Trèbol) were set up. The enriched rag-and-bone man Pau Forns built six apartment blocks between numbers 272 and 282 of Gran Vía, which are still known as the Cases del Drapaire (rag-and-bone man's houses). After the war, the neighbourhood's rural atmosphere gradually faded. In 1949, the Santa Dorotea parish was established on an old wheat field. At the same time, characters like the ricotta seller, the furrier, the sock vendor, or the pine nut seller, who sold five cents' worth of pine nuts to children while telling them a story, disappeared. Furthermore, the nine streets that were built climbing towards Montjuïc were named after flowers: Dàlia, Gessamí, Crisantem... Given such a remote and small neighbourhood, its associational tradition is surprising. In 1889, the first leisure organisation, Els Hereus, was created on Carrer de Sant Fructuós. And a year later, El Recreo, next to an inn on Carrer d'Amposta. In 1910, the choir La Nova Lira d’Hostafrancs was founded, also on Carrer de Sant Fructuós. Two years later, another organisation, Panxeta, was born on Carrer del Rabí Rubèn. Much of this activity was generated by the workers from the two large factories that were established in the neighbourhood, following the example of Emili Clausoles' gas factory, located on Gran Vía. When to call for Venetian stucco in La Font de la Guatlla

Inside the Butsems factory, next to an oak tree, was the fountain called La Guatlla (the quail), which gave the neighbourhood its name. Its use by industry and the dumping of rubbish on Montjuïc during the sixties contaminated it. Today, only the memory, a monolith, and a hymn remain. “Our grandparents remember when they searched for the name, / to christen our neighbourhood, it was easy to find. / The quail gave a sharp cry, while the fountain sang. / They chose Font de la Guatlla as the most beautiful in the world”.
