The filter sand compacts and becomes saturated over time, failing to filter correctly. The typical sign is increasing operating pressure (when it exceeds 1.5 bar, it's time for backwashing or replacement). Sand replacement is done every 5-7 years with normal use. This is a full-day operation. Draining the filter, removing the old sand (usually about 80-120 kg for a standard domestic filter), and vacuuming the collector bed. Then comes filling with new sand of appropriate granularity, adjusting the multiport valve, pressure testing, and start-up.
