How we work
During the next term, it will receive an influx of residents as new developments are completed. It will also be a unique intervention, as attempts are being made to interweave it with economic activity, urban greenery, facilities, and connections that will give it a prominence unimaginable just a couple of decades ago. Long-time residents, accustomed to neglect, view the process with a mix of excitement and demands. "We need commerce, urgent investment in facilities," they emphasise. This last quota is also fundamental for the territory to bring together new residents of different profiles, incomes, and ages, highlights the district councillor, Marc Serra, reflecting on the post-pandemic sprint and foreseeing that the 2023-2027 mandate will be one of visualising the great transformation and "filling it with life"; and the next, consolidating the neighbourhood's machinery. Four years ago, it was estimated that the complete process to address its 75 hectares (like 40 Eixample blocks) would span 16 years. The 2023-2027 municipal mandate in Sants-Montjuïc will be characterised by other strategic interventions such as the reform of Sants station and the redevelopment of its surroundings. Also by new advances in the transformation of the Can Batlló area and the intervention in Magòria, where 60 million will be invested in sports, endowment, and green facilities (city council), as well as healthcare (Government). Furthermore, the MPGM of Fira 1 will be developed, where flats, facilities, and new public spaces are projected. And within the framework of the Zona Franca, the participatory process on the reform of its central promenade has just concluded, for which more pavements and greenery are requested, a complex challenge that must be balanced with the mobility required for access to the neighbourhood, Fira 2, and the companies in the area. But the objective is for it to "stop" being an urban motorway and to humanise it in phases, as happened with Meridiana, notes Serra.
